π Who Maintains the Hydrants?
Painting & Maintenance: Hydrants in Los Angeles are maintained and painted by LADWP (Los Angeles Department of Water & Power).
Hydrant Colors: A hydrant painted with a red top generally means it is a high-pressure hydrant, often critical for hillside communities like ours. Otherwise, hydrants are generally painted yellow.
Annual Process: Requests for hydrant repainting are officially included in the LAFDβs (Los Angeles Fire Department) annual report to LADWP, usually transmitted each June.
If you notice a hydrant that is faded, damaged, or obstructed, the correct channel is to submit a MyLA311 request, and also alert the Los Angeles City Council District 4 field representative for Outpost Estates, and our local LAFD station #41 so they can include it in their reporting to LADWP.
π₯ Fire Safety: An ONA Priority
One of the top priorities for the Outpost Neighborhood Association (ONA) in 2025 is fire safety.
Keeping hydrants:
Cleared of brush and hillside debris πΏ
Easily accessible π
Highly visible with fresh paint π¨
β¦is absolutely essential. In an emergency, seconds matter β firefighters cannot waste valuable time searching for a hidden hydrant or clearing away brush and debris.
