Every so often, something surfaces that reminds us just how deep the roots of Outpost Estates run.

Linked here (and also shown below in the pictures) is The Outpost Bugle, a paper newsletter mailed to neighbors in September 1990 — 35 years ago — when Outpost Estates was still organized as the Outpost Homeowners Association. Long before websites, WhatsApp, or email newsletters, this was how neighbors stayed informed, voiced concerns, and built community.

Outpost Estates itself was established in 1927, and by 1990 the neighborhood was already grappling with many of the same topics we still talk about today.

🕰️ What’s Fun to See (and Familiar!)

Flipping through The Outpost Bugle, you’ll notice a lot that feels surprisingly current:

  • 🚒 Emergency preparedness and neighborhood response teams

  • 🚗 Traffic, speeding, and parking frustrations on narrow hillside streets

  • 🌿 Development concerns at Outpost & Franklin

  • ♻️ Recycling and water conservation (even during drought years)

  • 🏘️ A strong focus on community participation and voting

  • 😄 A healthy dose of neighborly humor and opinion

Some things change. Others… not so much.

🔄 From Homeowners Association to Neighborhood Association

Since 1990, the organization has evolved. What began as a traditional homeowners association later transitioned into what we are today:

Outpost Neighborhood Association (ONA) — a volunteer-run 501(c)(3) nonprofit focused on public safety, beautification, advocacy, and community building.

While the structure changed, the spirit did not: neighbors working together to protect and improve this unique hillside community.

💬 Then vs. Now

In 1990:

  • News was mailed

  • Membership forms were filled out by hand

  • Concerns were typed, photocopied, and delivered

In 2026:

  • News lives on OutpostEstates.com

  • Neighbors connect instantly via WhatsApp

  • Issues are reported digitally

  • Meetings are still… meetings 😊

Different tools. Same neighborhood energy.

📸 Take a Look Back

Below are scanned pages from the original 1990 issue of The Outpost Bugle. If you lived here then — or even if you didn’t — it’s a fun snapshot of what mattered to Outpost Estates 35 years ago. Some topics may feel dated. Others will feel very familiar. Enjoy the throwback.
