Residents of Outpost Estates often notice that our neighborhood looks a little different than many others in Los Angeles — there aren’t any overhead power lines crisscrossing our streets. That’s because when Outpost Estates was developed in the 1920s and 1930s, the community was designed to preserve its scenic character, and all utilities were placed underground. Why Underground Power Lines Matter
Scenic Preservation: Without poles and wires cluttering the hillsides, our neighborhood maintains the unobstructed views and historic charm that Outpost Estates is known for.
Safety: Underground lines are less vulnerable to high winds, falling trees, and fire hazards that can accompany overhead wiring. This is especially important in the Hollywood Hills, a high fire hazard area.
Reliability: While no system is immune to outages, underground utilities are less likely to be damaged by storms or accidents.
Challenges of Underground Infrastructure
Repair Costs and Time: When problems do occur, they can take longer and be more expensive to fix because the lines are not as accessible as overhead wires.
Aging Systems: Like many parts of Los Angeles, Outpost Estates’ underground infrastructure is aging, and maintenance or upgrades may be needed from time to time.
Coordination with LADWP: Any major repair or upgrade is coordinated through the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP), and neighbors may occasionally see crews performing underground work.
